AEW UK REIT (ticker: AEWU) has been the best performing trust in the Property: UK Commerical sector in recent years and has returned just over 11% annualised on a net asset value basis since its 2015 IPO. It has a diversified approach when it comes to both regional and sector allocation although it currently has a heavy bias toward industrial, which makes up just over half of its portfolio. AEW UK looks to buy cheap properties with relatively short leases and rents that are agreed at open market values rather than being inflation-linked. It also seeks to be an active investor and a number of i...

Pershing Square Holdings (ticker: PSH) is the third-largest investment trust on the London market with net assets of around £8bn. Although it traces the history of its returns back to 2004, the trust was first listed on the Euronext market in Amsterdam in 2014 before adding a London listing in 2017. Pershing Square is run by the hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who is a big fan of the investing approach taken by Warren Buffett, and it runs a very concentrated portfolio of between 8 and 12 positions. Ackman has a history of activism, although seems to have toned that down in recent years, and he...

Capital Gearing Trust (ticker: CGT) is one of a handful of defensive investment trusts that sit in the AIC's Flexible sector. It has been listed since 1973 and managed by Peter Spiller since 1982 although the trust's investment team has been broadened in recent years with Alastair Laing joining in 2011 and Chris Clothier in 2015. Famously, Capital Gearing has only had one down year since Spiller took charge -- a 2% loss in 2013/14. Since the turn of the century, it has held a reduced proportion of its portfolio in risk assets such as equities preferring index-linked bonds to protect against in...

Scottish American Investment Company (ticker: SAIN), often shortened to SAINTS, is one of the oldest UK-listed investment trusts. It sits in the Global Equity Income sector and has been managed by Baillie Gifford since January 2004. Unlike Baillie Gifford's more growth-focused offerings, SAINTS looks for slightly more mature companies that offer a combination of growth, resilience, and reliable income. Its performance over the last decade has largely matched global markets although it has tended to outperform its more conservative and value-orientated sector rivals. Somewhat unusually, it hold...

Mobius Investment Trust (hereafter Mobius - ticker: MMIT) was launched in October 2018 and is run by Dr Mark Mobius and Carlos Hardenberg, who both have very respectable records of managing emerging market funds, most notably Templeton Emerging Markets. Mobius looks for quality emerging market mid-cap stocks, typically valued at $3-5bn, that tend to be primarily involved in sectors like technology, healthcare, and consumer goods. The trust uses what it calls an 'ESG plus C' strategy, the C standing for corporate culture, and it runs a focused portfolio of between 20 and 30 positions with a lon...
