Rather as I suspected the equity markets have taken something of a breather in the last few days, unwinding a little of the froth that was appearing before then. Rising commodity prices and early evidence of higher inflation ahead are continuing to push up bond yields, the most notable trend of the moment. The flood of IPOs and SPACs (special purpose investment vehicles) now appearing or in the pipeline are another sign that the bull market may be running ahead of itself.

The signs of excess in the equity markets are accelerating, in the shape of IPOs jumping to huge premiums immediately after listing, historically narrow discounts on investment trusts and a surge in speculative trading in stocks. Amidst widespread expectations of a surge in growth in the wake of the pandemic, a recent focus of market analysts has been the risks associated with the $1.9 trillion stimulus package that President Biden is hoping to steer through Congress. Bond yields have broken through their 50 day and 200 day moving averages in what may be a harbinger of higher inflation ahead. ...

For premium subscribers we periodically do interviews with fund managers and analysts about current market conditions and funds and markets (occasionally shares) that we invest in. This one is with Ewan Lovett-Turner, who is the head of investment trust research at Numis Securities, one of the biggest independent broking firms in the City, well known for its investment trust research and corporate broker to more than 40 investment companies. I sat down this week with Ewan to talk about discounts and the concept of "value" as it applies to investment trusts and recent trends in primary and seco...

As promised I have recorded a short(ish) video explaining how the model portfolio which has featured in the Investment Trusts Handbook since its launch four years ago has performed both over the last 12 months and since initiation. Although I describe it as a model portfolio, it is not strictly speaking that, but rather an honest attempt to illustrate how picking a diversified selection of sector-leading trusts within an overall asset allocation and risk tolerance framework is capable of delivering good returns. Results to date have been good, but not spectacular, turning an initial investment...

It has been a good week for the markets, with equity markets showing good gains despite bond yields edging up and further evidence of investors' love affair with technology stocks continuing, in the shape of IPOs jumping to huge premiums immediately after listing. The pound meanwhile is almost back to its pre-referendum level against the dollar, although that is at least partly due to the general weakness of the US currency. The Bank of England has instructed banks to prepare for negative interest rates, but appears to be shying away from suggesting it will resort to them - the latter, if true...

It has been another fascinating week in the markets - lets be honest most weeks are like that - and so I am confining myself to a few thoughts, acknowledging (killjoy alert) that many of the most topical issues dominating the market headlines at the moment, such as the social media private investor revolt on Wall Street, are frankly not very relevant to any patient investor's real concerns. It is all too easy to get distracted from the main task of tracking the underlying trends in the market - are you on board with them or not? - while keeping an eye on the specific behaviour of your portfoli...
