The markets' positive start to the year resumed last week, with the S&P 500 index finally succeeding this week in breaching its 200-day moving average, which other important indices have also done, although the technical signal in the case of the US market still needs to be confirmed. This next interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve will provide just such an imminent test. Discipline therefore forces me to consider the possibility that my thesis could be wrong and the outlook for equities has improved markedly. Stuart's latest profile meanwhile is of the newcomer Foresight Sustai...

This seems a good moment to review how the various Money Makers portfolios are performing. I say a good moment because having been very cautious at the start of the year there are some signs that sentiment has taken a turn for the better in the last two weeks; bond yields have stabilised and are down from their peak, while equity markets have rallied somewhat. Gold meanwhile continues to range sideways. Commodities and specialist alternative asset trusts have been the standout strong performers this year. Could this be a turning point of some duration? Short answer: it is possible, but I am a...

I have recorded a new video that runs through some current market charts and explains why I think that we are probably due a rally after the market declines of the first four months of the year. The video also includes some of the slides that Simon Elliott and I presented at the Mello Trusts and Funds event earlier this week. My thanks to all those present who came to the presentation, including several regular listeners to the Money Makers podcast.

As promised I have recorded a short(ish) video explaining how the model portfolio which has featured in the Investment Trusts Handbook since its launch four years ago has performed both over the last 12 months and since initiation. Although I describe it as a model portfolio, it is not strictly speaking that, but rather an honest attempt to illustrate how picking a diversified selection of sector-leading trusts within an overall asset allocation and risk tolerance framework is capable of delivering good returns. Results to date have been good, but not spectacular, turning an initial investment...

Jonathan Davis Most weeks I aim to provide some short extracts from my weekly diary, highlighting interesting research and other odds and ends that I have read, heard or otherwise noted. Some will relate to specific stocks, others to more general phenomena. This will be supported by a separate more practical summary of investment trust news and data and regular Q and As with leading professional contacts of mine.
End of year reflections Now that the results for the year are in, it is time to take a final look at the performance of the last 12 months, which I am sure we can all agree has been...
