The slides accompanying this video presentation are available for download (PDF). The current holdings in each portfolio are summarised in the attached spreadsheet, together with an indication of which of them are - or have been - holdings of Jonathan Davis and his family in the past. Please note that the numbers are unaudited and subject to a more detailed review when I move the data to a new provider, after which I hope it will be quicker and easier t...

My latest Q and A is with Nick Greenwood, the manager of the MIGO Opportunities Trust, a fund of investment trusts. Its aim is to find special situations in the investment trust world, where the share price for any number of reasons may not reflect a trust's potential value. This mostly means looking for less well known trusts that he thinks are trading at undeserved or excessively wide discounts.
Nick Greenwood has been managing this trust (formerly known as Miton Global Opportunities Trust) since 2004. Our last Q and A with him was in May last year (link here). For technical reasons, the ...

Our latest Q and A for premium subscribers is with Simon Barnard, co-founder and lead manager of the Smithson investment trust, which has been in the Investment Trusts Handbook model investment trust portfolio since the trust launched in October 2018 and has performed very strongly since then. Here is a link to the last Q and A we did with Simon in December 2020. You can also read Stuart Watson's profile from March last year by following this link.
When we spoke just over a year ago, Smithson was coming off its second successive year of strong growth, having more than doubled in size to a £2 ...

Our latest Q and A for premium subscribers is with Georgina Brittain, the manager of two J.P.Morgan investment trusts, one dedicated to UK smaller companies, the other to UK midcap stocks. She is one of the longest serving and most prominent female fund managers in the sector. While the number of women directors on trust boards has notably increased in recent years, it remains anomalous that there are still very few women in senior fund management positions, something that is set to change slowly as time goes by.
The Q and A recording is here.
In it Georgina goes over the now familiar argume...

For premium subscribers we periodically do interviews with fund managers and analysts about current market conditions and funds and markets (occasionally shares) that we invest in. This one takes the form of a catch up Q and A with Ian Lance and Nick Purves, who took over as managers of the Temple Bar investment trust on November 1st last year. Both men formerly worked together for Schroders before joining the boutique firm of RWC Partners. The previous Q and A with them was six months ago.
Temple Bar, founded in 1926, was managed for many years by Alastair Mundy until his departure through...

For premium subscribers we periodically do interviews with fund managers and analysts about current market conditions and funds and markets (occasionally shares) that we invest in. The latest one is with Peter Spiller, the founder of CG Asset Management and the manager of the Capital Gearing Trust (since 1982, which makes him the longest serving investment trust manager in the UK). Capital Gearing Trust sits in the flexible investment sector and, like Personal Assets, Ruffer and RIT, offers a one-stop shop for those looking to have their money managed for them, but can also be used (as I use i...

For premium subscribers we periodically do interviews with fund managers and analysts about current market conditions and funds and markets (occasionally shares) that we invest in. This one is with Nick Greenwood, the manager of the Miton Global Opportunities Trust, another fund of investment trusts, though very different in its strategy to Peter Hewitt's BMO trust that we featured a couple of weeks ago. Its aim is to find special situations in the investment trust world, where the share price for any number of reasons may not reflect a trust's potential value. This mostly means looking for tr...

For premium subscribers we periodically do interviews with fund managers and analysts about current market conditions and funds and markets (occasionally shares) that we invest in. This 15-minute offering is with Charlie Morris, the former head of absolute return strategies at HSBC, now the Chief Investment Officer of Bytetree Asset Management, and an independent and perceptive analyst specialising in gold, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
Charlie Morris The growth of cryptocurrencies has been one of the big stories of the last decade in financial markets. Bitcoin is the most notable examp...

For premium subscribers we periodically do interviews with fund managers and analysts about current market conditions and funds and markets (occasionally shares) that we invest in. This one is with Peter Hewitt, the manager of the BMO Managed Portfolio Trust, a fund of investment trusts, and a longstanding investor in the closed ended sector. The trust has an unusual dual share class and sits in the flexible investment sector. It has delivered a share price total return of around 160 per cent over the last ten years.
Peter Hewitt Why the interest in this trust? Well one of the chief interest...

This one is with Ian Lance and Nick Purves, the recently appointed managers of the Temple Bar investment trust. Both men formerly worked together for Schroders before joining the boutique firm of RWC Partners.
