The markets' positive start to the year paused this week, with the S&P 500 index failing (again) to breach its 200-day moving average, and finishing flat over the week, while the UK equity market was modestly down. Monks (ticker: MNKS) was launched in 1929 and has been managed by Baillie Gifford since 1931. It originally had a couple of sister trusts, Friars and Abbotts, before the three were combined in 1968. Monks has had a global equity mandate for many decades now and since 2015 it has managed by Baillie Gifford's Global Alpha team. Spencer Adair became Monks' lead manager in 2021, moving up from deputy manager when Charles Plowden retired.
